Will BOSS save Yahoo's dwindling search market share?

Yahoo announces the launch of BOSS: Build Your Own Search Service. Using BOSS, developers and web service providers can use the Yahoo search engine and build applications on top of it. The move to open up Yahoo's search code seems to be aimed at increasing the reach of Yahoo search, so far a distant second to Google's web search, that currently dominates most of the search and online advertising industry. But will outside developers be able to save Yahoo?

Here's what Yahoo has to say about BOSS:

"BOSS (Build your Own Search Service) is Yahoo!'s open search web services platform. The goal of BOSS is simple: to foster innovation in the search industry. Developers, start-ups, and large Internet companies can use BOSS to build and launch web-scale search products that utilize the entire Yahoo! Search index. BOSS gives you access to Yahoo!'s investments in crawling and indexing, ranking and relevancy algorithms, and powerful infrastructure."

Twitter just launched its new homepage. The new homepage of twitter looks more like a trend search engine than a social website: its very slim and simple, and features a prominent search box and trending topics list.

Can Cuil actually deliver a better search engine than Google?

Cuil is a new search engine developed by Tom Costello and Ex-Google Search Architect Anna Patterson that is pitched to be much better, faster and bigger than Google itself (Cnet).

Unlike the previous seach engine Anna developed and sold to Google in 2004, this one is here to stay and be a competitor (Yahoo).

The Live Search Club is offered via Windows Live. It's completely free, all it takes is a Windows Live Id (aka hotmail) to register, and you play word games to accumulate tickets. You can then use these tickets to redeem for prizes, including various technology items including a wireless xbox controller the Rock Band special edition game. I have personally redeemed for two Xbox 360 controllers (before they changed the rules so you can only get one of each item) and a wireless keyboard, both of which I have received and work wonderfully, and am waiting on a Zune I ordered for the girlfriend. If you are feeling in a giving mood, you can donate points to various charities, and Microsoft will give a monetary value to the organization at the end of the year based on the number of tickets donated to that charity. They also have a search and give feature which allows you to search using the Live Search mechanism, and up to ten searches (which equates to ten tickets) can be donated to your charity of choice a day.
