We would keep him/her until we could turn them over to their owner or the shelter. I would continue to check up on the dog to make sure they found a home. If they didn't I would adopt or attempt to pair him with a non-profit organization. We have enough pets in our home.
Man... we found a dog in the freeway a few days ago without tags and a collar. So we brought it home. Our fourth large-breed (70 lbs) dog, and we have two cats. (and fish). We had to call animal control for the fourth dog, though, because she kept fighting with the other animals.

I have only owned 1 dog in my life and our family had him for less then a year. Cats on the other hand...........
