Calabash Alabash Argungu Fish Festival

The Argungu Fishing Festival is the highlight of a four-day cultural event in the north-western Nigerian state of Kebbi. Fishermen only come to the Matan Fada river once a year on the day of the festival. On this day, thousands of fishermen line up, carrying their traditional nets and gourds in teams of two; one carrying gourds to help them float, the other with a fishing net in each hand.

At the sound of a gun, they leap into the water, and have just one hour to catch the biggest fish. the team who catches the largest fish receives a brand new bus as a prize as well as one million Naira (around $7500).

Nigeria hopes the annual Argungu fishing festival will grow to be a tourist attraction.
