...oh and theres more (from the post below) that i forgot. just last night, i guess you could say i had a hallucination. it was more like an extreme fantasy...i began talking about something i had just learned to the wall, thinking about being somewhere else talking to people. then i snapped out of it and realized i was whispering to the wall. theres also something else....and its chronic. but i dont really want to say it here.

im 15 year old female, and i spend every second that i am home, online...and maybe a few hours a month i read. My laptop is in my room, and i always keep my door locked when im in my room. i use my laptop from learning about psychology, handwriting analysis, evolution of homosapiens, to  playing rpg, mmorpg, learning web coding, and rarely talking to my friends... Sometimes im on my laptop all night long, and the 15" screen is about a foot away from my face, which is deteriorating my vision and making me become nearsighted (currently 20/80 vision). Also, i believe i may have a type of insomnia known as DSPS...so far i've spent more than 6 hours learning about different types of insomnia. Even before i had my computer, i would read books all night long until it was 4-6am and i could fall asleep. And this (DSPS) of course doesn't help my computer addiction. Although i wouldn't call it an addiction, because i could easily replace it with something else, but i really don't want to. I could easily replace it with reading or playing sports, both of which i love, and are more beneficial to me. However, I have a social anxiety and you need to have someone else to play sports with...which i don't. And as for reading rather than being on the laptop...I read books too fast because of my insomnia and fast reading-easy comprehension. It took me less than a year to read most of the John Grisham and James Patterson books, while i was also in school (read first at 5th grade, but started to go on a marathon of reading them in 6th grade)....so my mother doesn't really like spending a lot of money on books, yet she complains that i'm on my computer too much, and she doesn't even know about the hours past 11am until 4-6am. OH and now that its summer, i  don't have school and i usually wake up at 1-3pm, and fall asleep at 4-6am. during the hours i am awake i spend them all on my laptop. thats 13 hours, but i do spend .5-1 hours a day taking my dog outside, and foraging for food in the empty fridge for food if im bored (i eat when im bored, and i've lost my six pack now that i don't do gymnastics anymore). oh thats another thing...the hunger pains. when im on my computer in the middle of the night, i usually have only been awake for 3 hours when my family eats dinner, so i don't eat that much...but then when i've been awake for like 8 hours, its late at night...and everyone else is sleeping so i can't eat much...since the kitchen opens into the family room (no walls separating), where my dad sleeps on the couch. YET another thing is the earphones. I watch a lot of movies and listen to music on my laptop that my ears start to hurt sometimes. This doesn't happen normally during the schoolyear, only during the summer when im on it the most. so pretty much...i guess i'm addicted. before i had my laptop, i had an old family computer located in a room near the bottom of the stairs. the screen was bright during the night, and the double doors had glass panes. So I used to sneak downstairs (my mom's a  light sleeper and wakes up in the middle of the night, anywhere from 2-4am, sometimes multiple times)...and i'd go on the computer for hours. This happened nearly every night for over a year, it stopped when I got my laptop. But i only got caught a couple of times.

If you work from home, and online - well let's just say that advertising that says you'll make millions on line while you lay on the beach is a bunch of shit - LOL.  But I love my work

Hi! I also spend time talking with friends online because I am disabled and my computer is my connection to the outside world. If you'd like to chat some time let me know. I am always looking for new friends and I love meeting new people. Hugs, Kel

Hi, my name is Kel and I am addict and so is my husband-to-be. I am addicted to surfing and learning. Also, as an aspiring writer I do a lot of research online. Lately though I have become addicted, spending about 8 hrs. a day tracking what my partner has been doing online. He is addicted to the women on the net, mostly texting. He also spends a huge amount of time texting his family in another country and doesn't seem to have much time for anything else these days, including me! He will add women to his messenger list or hide their emails and phone numbers so I won't see them. He tries to hide and delete everything even though he knows I am more then smart enough to find it. I have asked him to stop repeatedly telling him this is hurting me and destroying our relationship and yet he cannot stop himself! I truly believe he is addicted to this online behavior. He tries to justify it by saying they are all friends or relatives. Yeah right!  I truly believe he can't stop and needs help but what can we do? I hope they do find this to be an actual medical addiction because I know some other's who are also addicted and if they cannot stop on their own then there should be some type of help out there for them. If this type of help were readily available my partner and I would be the first inline instead of online!

The lowest you can put is 2-3 hours per day? This skews the graph heavily because some people actually use their computer 0-1 hrs per day on average (not me though! I'm 4-7). I'd suggest fixing this skew though.

On a school day, I spend about 5-9 hours, and on non-school days, I spend between 7-15 hours, depending on what I am doing that day. The longest I have been on the computer at one single time is about 19 hours, and that was a day before school, not Sunday though. We had a day off of school.

Well... I am a currently unemployed birthmother with a husband who works all the time. We only have one car (which my husband needs since he is a manager), so  I only really go places when he is home. I'm attempting to start my own genealogy business (which means I also research my own) and a nonprofit, as well as upload all my photos to my computer so I can create a scrapbook to give to my son when he is older. I also use the internet to keep in touch with friends, as I've kind of grown out of the whole "phone attached to my ear" thing. I do use Myspace/Facebook. I play the Sims 2, but not as much as I used to. I feel like it isn't so much an addiction as it is that the things I want to get done in a day require the computer.

I guess you could say  i'm addicted. I'm a single older retired lady  who lives alone. I have no grandchildren and only one married son, who i dont see often. I have no car, so dont really get out much.  I've had the net since oct. 2002. I spend alot of hours  a day on the computer, playing games..going to chat rooms, playing and downloading music. singing on kareokee site, YouTube music videos, looking  up info, reading my email, watching some  TV shows  online, am always finding new things to do, never thought of it as an addiction until now, and you had to tell me.LOL

Internet saved my life!! Literally!! In 2002 my whole world collapsed with the death of my twins, loss of my husband and home. A freind of mine used to go to Yahoo to chat and I followed him one day, met ppl who I didnt have to see the 'condolence' in their faces, since then got life back on track and still chat to those people I met online. Learnt alot of things from different cultures/countries and happy I found it.They say ur an addict if u check ur Email before u check ur regular mail lol, yes I was an addict..definately was..not so much now as I gained my life back. But I think it has alot of great things to offer aswell as a lot of bad things..like anyone who has a habit, its whether it controls YOU that makes it a problem.

Excuse me, just curious but you said that you "work online".  I am a 63-yr-old semi-retired woman and am wondering if you started your job on-site and then became a telecommuter, or if this job was established as a telecommuting job from the start?  I ask because I'd like to find work I can do online at home, but most of the online job posts are scams.  Would you mind clarifying your situation for me?  Thanks, Pat

I am the same way. I have an online course which requires me to log on for at least an hour a day.  Not to mention that most of the assignments in the class require internet research.  I also pay all of my bills online and frequently check my bank account.  As for playing games and surfing, I actually only spend an hour or so a day.

I'm a webmaster by profession so of course I'm online a lot (I'm in the 12+ hour category).  It's not all fun and games -- it's work!  The boss cracks the whip to assure I keep getting our minimum 12 million visitors per year and up.  And yes, when I go home after my 8-9 hour slavery, I do log on at home to play games, "poke" friends through my Facebook account, and manage personal emails but I go to sleep at a decent hour and DO have an active social life OUTSIDE of the computer.  There has to be some balance in my life between the screen and real face-to-face interaction with people.  When I go to out of town vacations, I leave the laptop at home and don't go anywhere near web access.

The internet is the absolute best way for guys to meet wild babes!  It's much better than hanging out in a bar or social event, and you can more easily weed out the ones who you can most likely score with from the ones just looking for a boyfriend.  Many guys I know are spending hours on the net for this purpose, rather than spending those same hours out on the prowl in various social settings.

A girl in Africa was murdered in 1992, if you don't pass this message around she will posses  your dog and bite you to death. JK!The internet has more interesting stuff than TV. Internet does not have commercials, TV does. Besides, the only thing they show on TV is reality and whenever I watch it, it's just CSI or Comedy Central.

Alright, I may be between 4-7 hours daily, but one-two of those is spent on the webcam with my dad or brothers who live hundreds of miles away. Two more hours is spent watching tutorials to learn new techniques in design applications. About an hour managing bank and brokerage accounts. The net merely consolidates interests and obligations into one area.

I work from home online and often time put in over time plus my regular nightly 2 hours of 'surfing/gaming" so at the least I am on 10 hours a day up to 14 possibly more.  But I do see a certain addiction.  i know when I am unable to play bejeweled or herd-a-word or do my crosswords I am irritable and have diffuiculty trying to fall asleep.  I have a friend who is a stay-at-home mom and she is totally addicted to ParentsPlace and iVillage message boards.  Being a voyer into others' lives and the drama that surrounds them.  She says it's her 'adult time'.
