Do you believe an online service like RateMyCop.com has the right to exist on the internet?

Read more about ratemycop.com, a service that allows the public to comment and rate policemen in their area (using officer's names and badge numbers) on Yahoo's The Working Guy.

No, use their names also if you know it. That way it gives people a chance to know who they are really dealing with!!

The problem with american cops, they get a badge & gun after 6 months police training with a high school deplomia. There not educated at all, and the word public servant is not a part of the job. What I find very funny is when cops are doing traffic they dress like there going to war combat gear.

With the exception of some small towns, the Police now look at almost everyone as "The Bad Guy" .  The inocent until proven guilty exists in words only.  Don't get me wrong, we need police and am glad I have them in my town.  However, the training techniques are out of touch with most people.  "To serve and protect" Now means to server you with a warrent of arrest and to put you in protective custody.

Very hard call.  Perhaps just badge numbers and not names.

As our rights are slowly eroded, the human beings on the police force use their authority in increasingly inappropriate ways.  I see firsthand every day the abuse of power by police and officials.  It is high time this is out in the open for the general public to see.  I am tired of everyone sticking their heads in a hole and pretending this doesn't exist simply because it does not affect them directly.

Power causes corruption, how could anyone NOT want police oversight.  If a cop was pepper-spraying old ladies wouldn't you want to know so he could be stopped?  Or do you really beleive we should take the cops word for it everytime and label anyone who complains as "bad" in some way?

"to identify personal vendetta and abuse of these services....till the time it is corrected...damage might have been done by the posters comments...." ya, just like when cops do it to citizens, it sucks.  At least THEY won't go to jail cause someone is  making crap up or exaggerating. But when a cop exagerrates or make stuff up, the consequences are much more severe.

once again the police when under fire for the wrongs they commit want to fall back to the blue wall of silence....they do not "police themselves for the bad cop"it has to be be done ..and to use one of their more used lines ..."""if You have nothing to hide then lets see or hear it !!"

Hard call, really.  On one hand, you would think that cops deserve privacy, too.  On the other hand, they're "public servants" with weakly constrained authority.  Seems like some kind of public oversight would be appropriate.

I agree 100%. The police are supposed to be public servants.
