I'm not sure that the popular vote is "the correct" mechanism, but the electoral college enforces a herd mentally that polarizes our allegiance and compromises our issues.  It stifles political change and creativity.  The majority of people have little or no way to communicate which issues and viewpoints are most important to them.

democracy is based on the principal of popular vote! Its a system the masses understand.

They would spend all of their time on the East and West coasts and nowhere else.
