Does identity politics make sense?

NY Times' Stanley Fish surprises today, declating that "sometimes, identity politics makes sense". Read the full article here.

Identity Politics is when "you vote for or against someone because of his or her skin color, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or any other marker that leads you to say yes or no independently of a candidate’s ideas or policies."

It makes sense only in that a person is shaped by his/her experiences, and identity obviously plays a huge role in the type of experiences a person acquires in their lifetime. I think it can make people more sensitive to the plights of others, and in some cases give them a more thorough understanding of issues.
