What kind of country is the United States from a religious stand point?

I have been on religious and political message boards for 6 years and there are many people who claim the United States is a "Christian Nation" and that all of our founding fathers were christian. Digging deeper I found some surprising answers the conclude otherwise but I want to know what the masses think about it.

It is my understanding that States could and did have official religions - Maryland was offically Catholic until the early 1900s - just that Congress could not establish a national religion.   I think the Supreme Court diverted from the Constitution when it upheld a federal law outlawing polygamy in the Utah Territory - the federal government violating the first amendment.  Basically the Supreme ruled that the new federal law superseeded the Constitutional's limit on Congress to abridge religious freedom.  The proper way to outlaw polygomy in the territories would have been to pass a Constitional Amendment to ban polygomy.

nope I am a Unitarian Universalist. We are interfaith. I am buddhist, wiccan and agnostic. I believe in a God or more like council of gods however I believe that we are so insignificant to them like ants. I think it is funny for those to defind the name of the Judeo-Christian version of God. Like something that is so massive and intelligent to design thier universe needs the defense from the like of cockroaches LOL.. whew.. cracks me up. I love atheist though..I love the fact that they are only 5 percent of the population and refuse to conform. They are discriminated against and treated like crap alot like the wiccan faith yet they refuse to sway from their truth. I find them to be great people.

I notice that your link contains one of my favorite Jefferson quotes: "...it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."
