Many school janitors are members of a union, and their are contractual limitations to exactly what work is required. A sound character curriculum and a fair and firm teacher should do the trick. I had students with similar questions, and I could take a few seconds to point at the "Character Counts" poster on my classroom wall. Student disagreements with school policies could be presented to the student's student council representative . . . . Haaaa!
Unless cleaning is part of your school's approved curriculum, the kid has a point. I would assume that student's are required to clean up after themselves as the school wishes to teach students personal responsibility. Some schools include 'character' as part of their official curriculum, and cleaning up after yourself is an appropriate part of an approved curriculum. It's not just reading, writing, and arthimetic - never has been. However, in this age of sue-happy parents, schools and teachers need to cover all bases . . .
