Animation as a storyteller

The animated film "Persepolis", based on a French-language graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, will open in New York and LA on December 25.

"Persepolis" is the story of a young girl in Iran during the Islamic revolution. As she gets older, she discovers Punk, and her boldness causes her parents to worry over her safety. At age 14, they send her to school in Austria.

If animation wasn't monopolized by the Disney empire early on, we'd see more interesting, western animated movies these days. I'm glad there's at least little movement into the more serious direction. TV cartoons are already more political than most live shows. Give it time.

I watch animation differently from live-action.  I see it more like a kid, maybe.  "Grave of the Fireflies" was a particularly haunting and emotional movie for me, whereas I doubt that I would have watched a live-action version all the way through -- out of boredom.
