The energy requirements would be preposterous. Assuming that this question reflects affordable, one-car-per-family types of transportation, it's hard to imagine an energy source that would satisfy billions of aircraft. Let alone the legal and security considerations for what would basically be a guidable multi-ton bullet.
well, not impossible, so much as impractical....we actually have the technology to build them already today, but most people can't even DRIVE properly, nevermind fly!
