When you consider the size of those ships, their weight, and the fuel volume contained in them, most ships are just bubbles waiting to be popped. It infuriates me that the industry is content to build and use ships which are guaranteed to hemorrage toxins with the slightest mishap.
Obviously, you folks don't know much about who is responsible for this spill. It wasn't the shipping company, the ship's captain, or, for that matter, the oil company that made the fuel oil. The PILOT, who is from San Francisco, was responsible for the position of the ship. Under maritime law, he is totally immune from liability. Don't blame the CEO - the shipping company was operating legally. Before you jump to conclusions about blaming your list of usual suspects, get your facts straight.
The oil in the SF bay is still floating on the water, and now I read there's another major spill in Russia: "The Black Sea region suffered its worst environmental disaster in years after an oil tanker and two freighters carrying sulphur sank in stormy weather last night." (guardian)

Yes. Incidentally, I've always wondered if the pilot error happened [because] the new bridge was just raised.
A hefty fine, but only because that's the worst thing that I can reasonably expect to happen to them.
