Dude, I don't think you've ever seen a video of Malmsteen playing or listened to a solo properly. He's a pro at sweep picking which is a "motion of the pick is combined with a matching fret hand technique in order to produce a specific series of notes which are fast and fluid in sound. Despite being commonly known as sweep picking, both hands essentially perform an integral motion in unison to achieve the desired effect." For pure speed, Malmsteen is better than Vai. Vai has a lot more to offer in terms of creativity and "soul" but for speed there's only one guitarist that's actually faster and that's Michael Angelo Batio. I recommend you go to this site to learn more about shredding: http://philbrodieband.com /muso-shredders.htm

I don't think you know what shredding is. Shredding IS playing guitar very fast. Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shredding_(guitar_playing_technique) If you compare Vai and Malmsteen together in terms of speed, Malmsteen comes out on top. I'm not saying that Vai can't shred, but it's not his speciality.
