Why are so many people afraid of clowns, when they are supposed to be funny?

I'm not afraid of clowns, I hate them! Last time i saw a clown i almost shoved his nose down his throat! Their happiness and goofyness freaks me out. A btw, the official term for this irrational aversion to red-nosed entertainers is coulrophobia. >:-)

It's a recognized phobia, listed in the medical dictionaries. The fear of clowns is called Coulrophobia. But you probably knew that already.
