What do you prefer? A plot-heavy book, or a book in which the plot is just an excuse for the literary work?

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal claims modern literature is coming back to the plot. After decades in which "high" literature was mostly distinguished by an experimental approach to the plot, with books that had thin to non-existant plots, that served only as a background to the inner musings of the author or his characters, literature seems to be coming back to the plot, big time.

I like books where the plot builds and builds and at the very end is shocks you with a grand finale. 'Jacob actually Heartilly's father!" (*0* )!!
