The problem here is, the automotive industry is incredibly interlinked. One manufacturer provides all the seatbelts, another all the windscreens, etc... If ONE of the big three folds, then the other two (plus Toyota, VW, Mercedes, Honda and any other companies that build cars in the US) will face serious problems as their parts suppliers will be unable to operate at a profit and close down.
