GM and Segway launch PUMA: The Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility project

General Motors and Segway unveiled a new electric urban transportation vehicle today called PUMA. The prototype PUMA shown has two seats, is powered by electricity, and can reach 35mph and drive for 35 miles on a single battery charge. The companies refused to expose the planned pricing of the vehicle, but said it'll cost around a third of what vehicles cost today.

And here's where it gets weird: "Ideally, the vehicles would also be part of a communications network that through the use of transponder and GPS technology would allow them to drive themselves. The vehicles would automatically avoid obstacles such as pedestrians and other cars and therefore never crash, Burns said." (Huffpo)

I'd hate to be in one of these things. It takes all the fun out of driving.
