Come on... It is a symptom of how overstretched the US armed forces are... They have loosened ALL the restrictions, even while Bush was in office, ignoring criminal records and obesity, everything but homosexuality. And most of the new recruits would be Mexicans and other Latinos. Anybody of the kind of background that would be likely to commit acts of terrorism, would be THOROUGHLY vetted. Seems to me that anybody who would willingly join the US army and fight for their adopted country is by FAR the more suitable an immigrant than somebody who enters the country illegally in order to undercut US workers and pick fruit for three dollars a day.
The US is pretty much unique amongst nations, because unlike almost all other countries (with the minor exception of the UK) their TV and films are seen globally. Foreigners get a (somewhat idealised) picture of life inside the US long before they ever set foot inside American borders. They will have a far better picture of the subtleties of American culture than of any other country, sometimes a far better picture than parts of their OWN country.
The USA has always been like that--French Foreign Legion-esk crap.
Personally, I believe that if you have integrated into a society enough and understand the subtleties of their culture, then sure--citizenship is earned.
but if you hop on a plane and join the army without fully understanding the countries culture it wouldn't make any sense.
but then again I suppose their are a lot of people out there who want citizenship this way--you know whom you are freeloaders!
man this is a high controversial subject. I believe it depends on how deep your patriotism goes.
"For King and Country!" - yeah, right!
they are building an army of mercenaries. not to talk about Blackwater, an army for hire.
