GM, Ford, and Chrysler were in trouble BEFORE the meltdown. While Toyota and Honda and VW and Mercedes and BMW have been growing, GM, Ford and Chrysler have been in trouble. A few years ago, I heard that Ford was losing money building cars - they were making profits off their finance plans. People are not buying family sedans in the numbers they used to, and recently I read an ad for a pickup truck that advertised a two for the price of one offer- buy a twin cab and you get a free single cab into the bargain. People are not buying cars because they are paying for their subprime mortgages, or their credit is just so overstretched. I say shut down a large part of the car industry for a while, have them build wind and solar generators, and buses and trains, as many public transport systems are overstretched, while extra funding is provided for R&D, researching ultra low consumption and electrical engines.
