Does anyone know what the first religion was? I believe the first civillization existed in Mesopatamia/Sumeria, my guess is that they were the first religionists. But you cannot be sure about things like this.
Instilling fear seems to be a common thread still effective today. By adding uncertainty and doubt make a hat-trick mantra sure to keep the people obedient no matter who is in power.
Try telling somebody in ancient Greece that thunder and lightning were the result of a buildup of static electricity caused by friction within air currents creating a negative charge which discharged through the path of least resistance, and they would probably look at you as if a small elderberry bush sprouted from your temporal lobe. Say that the God of Thunder is angry, and they would immediately understand.
