Choice is a very different debate than cause or effect. A significant percentage of scientists would argue that we ultimately have no choices on anything at all -- being a collection of chemical reactions that abide by rules in a deterministic universe.
Nobody can choose who they are sexually attracted to. For example, there was this girl I knew a while back. She was attracted to me, but I didnt feel THAT way about her. She just was not my type. If I was able to make a conscious decision to be attracted to her, I would have, because we get on well together. Instead, we are just good friends, and that is all we ever will be, and I have to find somebody I am attracted to. I mean, they are out there, but that kind of woman is not attracted to me physically, for the most part. My standards are possibly too narrow. I don't know.-Look at what homosexuals have to go through in some communities. In some places they risk being STONED TO DEATH rather than give up on the person they love. Now I do not know what causes people to be attracted to certain people, but that force is mighty powerful.
It would seem the Gay community does not want this subject studied or researched in any form, judging from the responses above. The only accepatable opinion on this matter to them would be total acceptance and maybe even encouragement in this lifestyle. It seems like a very narrowminded view and an extremely defensive stance on this issue.Which may pose many other questions?
Again this was just an innocent question not ment to offend or enrage anyone. I guess it seems this issue is just not up for debate? Best wishes to you also.
I don't understand why you are so defensive? I was just asking to try to understand it a little better, because it is so un-natural to me I was wondering why it is so natural to others. There was no intent to offend or insult anyone. But you have given me an idea for a follow up poll Thanks and best wishes to you.
To those who say it's chosen or the result of abuse I say: Unless you're gay yourself, how can you possibly know what makes another person the way they are? How would you know that I chose to be gay? You're just voicing your religious beliefs and nothing based on science or personal experience. Then again, the evangelical community has demonstrated a clear disdain for science and empirical evidence. No matter how much scientific evidence proves that homosexuality is innate, you would never admit it because it would strip you of your right to discriminate (i.e, if god created people who were gay by nature, how could you say what he did is wrong).
What a vile poll. How would you like it if I said that heterosexuality is the result of sexual abuse. What a narrow, unenlightened point of view. Clearly a poll generated by a total rube.
I can't even believe people still debate this. Let me break it down to you all like this: If you're completely straight, do you ever sit down and give being gay serious thought? Like really, serious thought -- "Hmm...I wonder if I'd really enjoy getting it on with someone of the same sex." No. Obviously you don't. You know instinctively what you're attracted to. So why do you think gay people have sat down and decided to choose a life of potential alienation and discrimination? Just for the glamour of it all? Test it out if it's so easy to choose, go be gay for a month and get back to me. Meanwhile, the only "choice" at play here is whether or not one decides to admit to themselves that they are gay and then if they will do anything about it. There are countless people who've been gay and "chosen" a straight path...often to disastrous results. I'm disgusted that I even had to get into this today.
I'm sure that each of these is appropriate to some particular circumstances. However, I once read a piece of research that -- if true -- really colors the issue. Per this study, something like 70% of all gay men had been sexual abused as children, and nearly 93% of all gay women had been sexual abused or raped. Unfortunately, when I started collecting references and data related to social issues several years ago, I was unable to find this particular study, so I'm not sure if it was done by reputable people.
i really cant see anything wrong with this poll i dont know why people are being so seroise about it....

I didn't pick that option.
MAN ! ha ha ha ha
Of course, that does not make it a choice.
I know. Didn't think a poll could taint my Saturday. I chose not to vote.
OMG you are gay?!
It's a cult

Good idea for a poll. People DO have widely varying opinions on this matter, but I've never seen anyone make a poll about it.
