In one of the old Sinbad movies, they have a comic relief character who keeps repeating the adage: Trust in Allah, but tie up your camel. I think that expresses it pretty well.
I have no problem with people choosing the Bible, though I think it is pretty unadvisable, myself. I do have a problem with public servants saying this. Reagan said the Bible would be his choice. I have a much bigger issue with the fact that some people who would pick the Bible would like to deny the rest of a choice.
If everyone were to be stranded on a desert island for five years and were given this choice immediately prior, the world would probably be a lot better a decade later.
Hmmm God helps those who help themselves... The Bible is very limited in regard to survival tips, and those tips are only useful in the Middle East, with rules regarding food handling in desert and semiarid environments. So, even if I was religious, I would take the book about survival.
**** The Bible!
