Earth's Climatic History
During most of the earth's history, global temperatures were 8-15 degrees Celsius warmer than today.
The most recent Ice Age was from 2,000,000 BC - 12,000 BC, and the glacial retreat is still happening.
Between 5000 and 3000 BC, global temperatures were 1-2 degrees celsius higher than they are, today, and is called the "climatic optimum" -- a period of warmth when human civilization was first able to thrive.
From 900 AD - 1200 AD (the warmest the earth has been since the climatic optimum), the snow line at the Rocky Mountains was 370 meters above current levels.
From 1550 to 1850 AD, global temperatures were at their coldest since the beginning of the Holocene (the glacial retreat that started around 14,000 years ago).
