I've flown several times this year but without delay (knock on wood!).

I picked 1-4 because that was the best option, but I haven't experienced a delay for more than 15 minutes.

That happened to a friend of mine except they had been bumped from a flight in Tokyo, and they had three nights for free in a luxury hotel.

I had a flight delay that took overnight. It wasn't that terrible. It was in London and they put me up for free at a nice hotel so I could take a nice nap and a bath, and then I had a good meal at the hotel and drank a nice beer, all on them.Ok, but I also had an experience in London where I had a layover for like 10 or 12 hours and I ended up having to sleep on the floor of the terminal, which sucked. I was wearing shorts and a T-shirt and had nothing but that and backpack and they were blasing the AC in the airport. That was a trying experience.

Arriving early does not help much either... I was flying in from Bali, and Adelaide was fogged in, so instead of stopping there, it went directly to Melbourne, and I had to wait for a couple of hours because it was early morning (a bit before dawn) and I had no change to call somebody, no money for a taxi, and had to wait for my brother to pick me up at the time that the flight was due.
