Should the U.S. drinking age be lowered from 21 to 18?

Over 100 college presidents -- from prominent schools including Dartmouth, Duke, Syracuse and Tufts -- have joined the Amethyst Initiative, calling on lawmakers to lower the legal drinking age from 21 to 18.

Amethyst Initiative members believe the current drinking age encourages binge drinking.  Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) counters that lowering the drinking age would lead to more deaths.

th legal drinking age here is 19-and i waited to drink till i was 19-the lower the age limit the more apt kid will feel they can wait till theyre legal to start drinking. I think 21 is too high-it just pisses kids off and makes them wanna rebel by drinking b4 theyre legally allowed. By banning it to teens youre just making it look more enticing.

hmmm, tough one. Well if you end up like anyone in the last picture or picture number 2, it can't be a very good thing.I think the ALcoholics anonymous rooms are probably pretty packed as it is.Also the bar scene would change big time.

The 'National Minimum Drinking Age Act' was established in the 80's.  That is for drinking and purchasing.

The drinking age in the UK is 18 and we have a real problem with underage drinking over here.

Hmmm.I like option two. Very good point. Funny photo too. Reminds me of my younger days, I think, I can't remember.Anyway, why should the US be so uptight about this stuff. The drinking age in Europe is 18. Is this a state law or a national law, does anyone know? I could swear that there are some states that allow 18 year olds to purchase liquor.

Well this poll compells me on two different front. It occurs to me on one hand that lowering the drinking age is giving the impression to kids to go out and drink, it's OK, get SH*^ faced.....we don't need sharp young minds in this country anway.....But on the other hand it occurs to me that staggering numbers of pre-aged kids drink regularly anyway, with their families and probably more with their buddies. So I guess it doesn't make  difference in that sence.
