The current prison system is like a revolving door for sex offenders and other dangerous elements.  We have a 1/3rd acre lot near one of the biggest American cities.  There isn't much space for the kids to play in our fenced back yard, and I don't dare let them play out in the neighborhood unsupervised (like my sister and I were able, as children).  I'm happy to take them to the play park a few times a week, and my wife takes them to the water park about twice a week.  They also come with us when we take the dogs to the dog park.  Beyond that 20 hours or so of supervised outdoor time per week, a little back yard time, and some arts & crafts or reading time, they have to find their own entertainment.  Video games and cartoons (DVD only) are pretty easy, and I appreciate the many hours of entertainment they provide.
