I've met guys that "run themselves down" for no good reason, and I agree that it's a major loser flag. But I am reading this study to be about difference in humor rather than self-deprecating behavior in general. A guy that can take (or make) jokes at his own expense sometimes isn't necessarily a person who's going to moan about what a loser he is. People who project their humor (especially nasty American humor which is heavily insult-oriented, or English humor which is heavily embarrassment-oriented) seem pretty hostile and makes a lot of people feel uncomfortable.
