He did have a few good ideas. Our political climate has shifted so far to the Right, that Nixon almost looks like a progressive in retrospect. I made a poll about this earlier, pointing out that Nixon imposed wage and price controls, indexed Social Security for inflation, and created Supplemental Security Income (SSI). He created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), promoted the Legacy of parks program and implemented the Philadelphia Plan, the first significant federal affirmative action program. - Comparatively, Bill Clinton's policies seem conservative: the welfare reform bill, NAFTA, GATT, farm deregulation, telecommunications deregulation and financial services deregulation, all of these things moved policy in a market-oriented direction.<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" src="http://pollsb.com/wd/9852"></script><div class="pollsbcom_site">create a <a href="http://www.pollsb.com">free poll</a> on pollsb.com</div>
Two recessions. A doubling in the price of fuel. Relaxing of regulations on American financial institutions that have led to a global rise in interest rates and inflation. A record increase in US government borrowing that has also led to a global rise in interest rates and inflation. The timing of some of these (particularly the first Bush recession which began just when I had moved to London, and resulted in my job being axed and my having to fly home losing tens of thousands of dollars) and the rise in fuel right at the time that I got a car, have made things bad for me personally. This is without mentioning the things that DIDNT affect me personally.
Carter inherited the Nixon/Ford malaise. Not that he was exactly adequate, but Carter did badly but he had less to work with than Bush did, Carter took a bad situation and didnt improve things much, while Bush took a situation which in some ways were good, and some ways were bad, and made everything worse.
The news this morning is that Bush would agree to a "general time horizon" for withdrawing troops. He's too petty to admit that it's a "timeline;" that's the Democrat's word! His P.R. people had to invent a new phrase for him to use so that he wouldn't seem like he was backing down.-Whatever. At least some of the troops get to come home.
Some he personally caused, and all of those things he made far worse.
and he personally did ALL that? i think not...

i think that honor should be bestowed upon jimmy carter....
And he knew when to give up.
Bush has always lived in his on little world.
Nixon started us on the road to normalization with China, so he was good for at least one thing.
Nixon is probably one of the worst presidents we have ever had.
