i grew up going to bluegrass festivals with my grandparents...and i could swear i saw allison krauss when she was a pre-teen singing on stage....i was lucky and got to see some of the greats before they passed away...man i miss those days sometimes....things were just simpler....
Folk instruments can be like that. Nothing is "official;" nothing is "correct." -A big exception is Traditional Bluegrass. You wouldn't believe how purist these guys can get! (These are the people who frown on "Newgrass," or any deviation from the norm.) I made the mistake of bringing my Tenor Banjo (4 strings instead of 5) to a Bluegrass band, and everybody frowned at it. And just forget about the Pennywhistle (even though Bluegrass and Celtic music have a lot in common; both have jigs and hornpipes, and even some of the same songs in the traditional repetroire, like The Little Red-Haired Boy.)
I can't believe I forgot that one!
Moonriver, may I suggest?
i even have ralph stanley's autograph....all this bluegrass talk has me wanting to go find a bluegrass festival goin' on somewhere near here.....lol
Wow! That IS lucky.

the boss's has 8 strings....but an article i read states that a banjolin has 4 strings....hhhmmmmmm
The banjolin, yes. 8 strings and tuned like a mandolin, but with a banjo's body and sound. I might have to get one sometime.
have you ever heard of a bandolin? it is a cross between the banjo and the mandolin....my boss has one....and can't even play it...lol
He will be missed. If I ever get half as good on the mandolin, I'll consider myself lucky.
may bill monroe rest in peace....there is only one song i am not familiar with....
Those are all great songs, though.
