It's no different with other trade associations. An unethical (but not criminal) doctor can be banned from the AMA and have his license revoked. Likewise, as I understand it, an accountant can lose their CPA if they've been unethical.
Judges are held to higher standards and have to face other punitive measures than courts. There is a court within the court. Unethical behavior can be grounds for dismissal. It doesn't have to be illegal and the burden of proof is not the same. HIs dismissal was the right decision.

Judge Hoskins continues to hear cases while they deliberate a range of possible punishment, from none to a one-year suspension of his license to permanently barring him from sitting on the bench or practicing law. Today (July 3) was when he was pulled off the bench. Although Hoskins later was acquitted of criminal charges for his involvement, the Ohio Supreme Court said today that the transactions were clearly unethical and merited his removal from the bench.
