Officeshrew is right. The problem has been linked rather authoritatively to speculators. While supply & demand will make oil more precious in decades to come, the contemporary price hikes have nothing to do with diminished supply or significantly increased demand.
Not much sweet crude left to drill... The problem is, we are using more crude than we can possibly drill, it is the law of supply and demand. The only solution, and you might not like this, is STOP DRIVING AND USE LESS FUEL because IT IS ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE.

Nationalize the refineries, Put the CEOs in jail.
