My pic would be the Nikon D-40X or the new D-60. They're kinda expensive, but excellent cameras. Your choice should really depend on what you photograph, your skill level and your budget. Try dpreview.com for the best buying guide.
Nikon cameras often seem to get the best reviews. I bought Ang an Olympus 500 E because Olympus probably has the best brand reputation short of the Bronica.
The Olympus E500 series and greater have the stabilization built into the camera, not the lenses...makes lenses more affordable, and for those inclined you can purchase off brand lenses (Quantaray, etc). I'm a philistine and still use film. I have an OM-1, OM-2n and OM-4 with a wide array of Zuiko lenses.

I have a Pentax *st DL, which is fine for family photos but will eventually upgrade to a faster, higher resolution dslr
