Religious beliefs (or lack thereof) aside, has the Catholic church been the world's conscience for the past 2,000 years?

On the subject of Catholicism, atheist philosopher Habermas wrote: “The church, and nothing else, is the ultimate foundation of liberty, conscience, human rights, and democracy, the benchmarks of Western civilization. We continue to nourish ourselves from this source. Everything else is postmodern chatter.”

There were Native American Indian tribes that were very peaceful and lived in harmony...  I believe the Catholic Church as a whole has always tried to represent peace, but look at the Inquisition...

Hmm... I don't think that the catholic church has been a positive or negative force in an overall sense.  They've done both good and bad, and overall they're just another form of authority that has a history of power.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I thought only a select few were allowed to vote in a Greek democracy.

There's no real in between answer here, and besides, what about the Greeks?
