State Offers Cross on License Plates.

Under a new law, South Carolina is the first state to give drivers a chance to display a Christian cross on their license plates. The design features a cross over a stained-glass window and the words "I Believe."

The governor isn't happy, The New York Times reports, and critics have threatened to fight it, calling the plate a state endorsement of religion.

But the bill's co-sponsor, Republican Sen. Lawrence K. Grooms, rejected that criticism.

"I didn’t see a constitutional problem with it," he told the Times. "We have other plates with religious symbols on them and phrases like 'In God We Trust.' Just because it's a cross, some very closed-minded people don't believe it should be on a plate."

In April, Florida rejected a similar design, shown below.

In the interest of fairness, I demand a plat of similar veracity with Buddha, Confucius, Allah, anarchy symbol, and various other religious dietys or symbols.  It's only fair

I personally miss the old days when every license plate was a solid color with each state having their own color.  Made it a lot easier to recognize (especially when a crime was committed) and just plain easier to read.  If a cop ever asks me to give him/her the info from a license plate, I will have to say... "Well, I have no clue what state it was from and there was so much art on the plate I couldn't read the numbers.  But it was a lovely picture of a cat sitting in a child's lap underneath a cross in a field of poppies."

People have the right to show off their favorite Nascar driver on a plate, but not their religion?  Good grief!  Live and let live!
