Perhaps the key to a decision lies in a reversal--which of these items would we (you, etc.) most like to have from an alien civilization; which would be most revealatory?  Any text might be undecipherable, visual art is culturally subjective and possibly meaningless--a hard copy might provide the most telling information if examined forensically; hardly in the spirit in which  the painting-offer was supposed, though.  The music relies on an assumption of common symbolism, and could be undecipherable.  I believe the finger is the wisest choice 'hands down.' har har.

Music and maths are connected, but maths is far from universal, Its a human concept derived from our type of consciousness these aliens probably dont have anysimilarity to us phycological or otherwise, music is an invalid choice.

Your forgetting that even contact with an alien race would be considerd fairly strong evidence god dosn't exist. Far from being Gods favourite children we would be just another race I'm sure the heads pf church wouldn't like that.

What could they learn from a finger that that they couldn't learn from the doctor's book? If an alien were able to visit us then they'd be far in advance of us. Why give them a copy of the Old Testament? Would any advanced culture read that and do anything other than draw the conclusion we're all mad for ever having believed such a catalogue of cruel fairy stories. Give them something that represents the apex of our learning - not something that shows us to be primitive, superstitious savages. They'd look on it in the same way we look upon the Aztecs and the ritual sacrifice they practices to appease the sun god.

I say the bible. Think about this, if god DID exist, then surely every sentient race in the universe would have its own Jesus (just using christianity as an example here,of course you could insert any other religion) in the history of their race who preached the exact same gospel,or at least have prophets who did. Meeting extra-terrestrials should provide the truth about God once and for all.

And exactly *who's* finger will it be and *which* finger should we send?

hey the music says its Beethoven not Bach -- I think you'd confuse the poor people.

I think all of the options are poor choices. The Bible, while an interesting choice, only represents the spiritual belief in less that half of humanity. The physician's desk reference? Screw all of the wonders of this planet and eons of human achievement, let's share our innards with them. Severed finger? I'm sure that giving them body parts will impress them. I'm sure that whatever the space alien word for "barbarian" is will cross their minds. As for Starry night and Bach, Nice, but what will they really learn form those choices? How about a set of encyclopedias?

our complete genetic code is present in one cell of our bodies, if we gave a finger, they could map our genome in hours, and quite probably know our mental and physical capabilities. Art and culture are caused by our minds, what better way to communicate than to give them a map of our minds (that is present in our DNA) in the finger. The bible they would send the message we all beleive the same thing, which we do not, therefore it is not a valid choice. The painting be the third best idea, It would give the least information, music might give a little more but the best, would be the finger.

THESE ARE ALL REALLY STUPID CHOICES!!!  What idiot thinks up these polls?  This is a senseless selection of objects.

I don't think a "rosetta stone" is needed to create a common mean of communication. Math will be a natural starting point. Learn how to represents numbers, simple mathematical operations, "true" ,"false" concepts,.... and in a very short time we will be able to "speak" about astronomy, nuclear physics, chemistry..._p_

Considering they already have the technology, or ability whatever it is, to come to earth from  their planet, I think if they come with hostile intentions, it's not a little human finger given or not that will change our fate ; if they want to "wipe us out" I don't think we could do anything...  _p_

Yes, but a sheet music without the musician and his "human sensibility" to play it, won't  give these aliens a lot of information about us... _p_

maybe they could encode music into a viable source of communication for themselves, but that's redundant because they'd obviously already have theyre own means of communication, and without some sort of intergalactic Rosetta Stone, we'd have a near impossible time coordinating the new language with them. Not to mention, our scales are based off of pythagorian math, which is specific to our world's physics. They may or may not even have an auditory range, let alone be sensitive to our spectrum of sound waves.

music is math and could be used as a means of communication

Maybe they could take a DNA sample from that finger. -Giving a hostile alien race one of our fingers could be giving them the necessary information that they would need to create a perfect biological weapon to wipe us out. Let's be careful about giving gifts to extraterrestrials until we know who they are and what they want!
