Over half of the anti-war pacifist of the late 1930's ended up joining the war against Hitler, who was anti-socialist.  Even the great pacifist Albert Einstien understood that pacifism is an ideal, not a reality.

I wouldn't choose the word "impossible" personally.  I think pacifism is a noble ideology, but the world isn't an ideal place.  Reality makes a lot of noble ideologies worthless, wreckless, or irresponsible.
