My coworker and I have been in a years-long discussion about blogs, the proliferation of websites, and user-generated information. We are both web professionals that have been doing web sites since 1995.
He has the opinion that there is too much garbage on the web, and that millions of blogs detailing everyone's daily life makes the internet extremely cluttered -- and more difficult to use. In short, he's against amateurs publishing themselves online.
In the case of professional writers, he also objects to "regular" content being published -- articles that are created for a schedule, even though there often isn't a compelling topic.
Is he right?
Thank god the internet isn't policed like the rest of the world.
He is so wrong. The whole idea of the Intetnet is the democratization of publishing power. If amateurs couldn't publish, the Internet would end up like television: brainless, manipulative, coruppt, mediocre, and controlled by 5 main corporations.
