Not really sure on this one, think you and I chatted about this. An acquaintance has a Canon. He took tons of casual shots at an XMAS party and for the most part, they were terrible. Since that's what the average person buys a camera for, I would have to say not Canon.
I bought an Olympus for my wife, who is a photography enthusiast. They have a good reputation, and it's a brand I knew that she'd recognize. All of my research, however, indicates that Nikon usually kills the competition in the reviews. However, she "hates it" when I do internet research and come to a conclusion that violates her expectations, and since I was already getting her a DSLR instead of a high quality film camera, I decided I was challenging her expectations a lot, already.
At the moment, I think Nikon. When I bought my Pentax, it was because you can use ANY K-mount lens with it and, well, I'm a loyal Pentax gal. But Nikon has no shutter delay and, for the same price, higher resolution. In retrospect, I'd have rather eaten the higher Nikor lens prices and gone with the Nikon.

And YOU know I have one of those too.......with loads of Canon lenses!
You know what's cooler than a DSLR, a regular film SLR. For that reason, I voted Canon.

I buy all Sony cameras.
