Winner of the 1989 Grammy Award for "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance" ?

Jethro Tull? Haaaaaa! The band won the 1989 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance, beating the favourite Metallica and their ...And Justice For All album. The award was particularly controversial as many did not consider Jethro Tull hard rock, much less heavy metal. Under advisement from their manager, who told them they had no chance of winning, no one from the band attended the award ceremony. In response to the criticism they received over the award, the band took out an advert in a British music periodical with a picture of a flute lying amid a pile of iron re-bars and the line, "THE FLUTE IS A HEAVY METAL INSTRUMENT"

I love Jethro Tull and all... but Alice Cooper is pretty freaking badass and I can never pass up voting for him.

I'm one of the biggest Tull fans out there, but I have to agree... it's NOT heavy metal. I'll bet Ian keeps the award on his mantel, and laughs when he shows it to people.
