I live in a small town miles from anywhere. I think they figured the waste of fresh water and the fuel reqired to transport household recyclables would do more damge to the environment than help. Many people do some recycling - saving aluminum cans and bringing metals to a local junk yard. Keeping older vehicals well-maintained also helps the environment more than junking it and buying a new car, which caused more waste. Garage sales, yard sales and thrift stores also help keep items out of the landfill a few more years.
I don't understand why, either. Our county just started offering curbside pickup for recycleables, and we signed up for it. The information that we received said do not sort glass from plastic from foam. Maybe it's a job-creation thing? Is there some poor schmo working for the county that is to separate these things, do you think? We'd gladly do it ourselves, but they told us not to.
